Children's Issues Organizations and Projects:

1)  PISA (Pediatric Interest Student Association) -  They have a number of contacts to work with kids on a regular basis as well as annual projects such as a Christmas Party at LeBonner.  For more information contact:

2)  Caldwell School (with the Church Health Center) -  Work with children in school based setting.  Work in a clinic or via health education classes for kids.  Requires flexible hours and students must show initiative to organize own work.  For more information contact:

3)  YES (Young Ebony Scientists) - Mentor and encourage disadvantaged kids interested in the sciences at Booker T. Washington High School.   Requires a commitment of working once per week with student and attending  monthly meetings which involves fun activities for the kids (i.e. parties, etc.)  For more information contact:

Minority Issues:

1)  SNMA (Student National Medical Association) - Has a number of protocols (or projects) involved in extensive community outreach.    Some of these include:  encouraging interest in the medical professions among minorities for elementary age up to college age students (as well as aiding those students as they pursue a career in medicine), violence prevention with adolescents, participation in local health fairs, tutoring sessions for area students, sex education for teens, AIDS education, ACT preparation for high school students, tissue organ donor education and recruitment project, working with young girls to teach self-awareness and self-respect, and spending social time with children in local hospitals.  For more information contact:

3)  AAPI (Association of American Physicians from India) -  Projects include work with Habitat for Humanity.  For more information contact:

4)  Hispanic Issues -  There are a number of projects both in development and currently up and running to work with the growing Hispanic community in Memphis.  One of these includes tutoring high school students in English (ESL - English as a Second Language) who are interested in the medical professions.  While knowledge of Spanish is helpful, it is by no means necessary to get involved in Hispanic issues.  For more information on these projects contact:

2)  UT School of Pharmacy - Medical students have been invited to participate in the many projects organized by the school of Pharmacy.   Some of these projects include:  Ongoing blood pressure sreenings, Immunization drives, work with the Loving Arms kids (kids affected either directly or indirectly by HIV), asthma education programs, and patient medication review.  For more information contact:
