Dr. Pedro Velasquez-Mieyer is part of a team studying the health impact of the epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus among children in the mid-south area. He has concentrated his research efforts on identifying possible mechanisms involved in the genesis of obesity and related conditions and the potential influence of racial and lifestyle factors to predict treatment outcomes. To increase understanding of the natural history of obesity and associated co-morbidities, he has been directly involved in the follow-up of cohorts of pediatric and adult subjects with these conditions during the last several years. In both children and adults, he is evaluating the role of insulin and GLP-1 in the etiology and pathogenesis of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other associated complications.
