Dr. Marion Hare's research focus is on numerous primary disease prevention strategies in general pediatrics. She is particularly interested in the importance of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of disease, particularly childhood obesity and asthma. In 2001, the CFRC funded the SPARK Pre-K Project with Dr. Hare as the Principal Investigator. This prospective, randomized group trial was designed to 1) develop a physical activity program appropriate for pre-K children, 2) assist teachers in the implementation of the program, and 3) measure the program’s effectiveness in increasing student engagement in moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and improving their physical fitness. Results so far from this successful program show that the curriculum can be successfully implemented in a pre-K public school setting, significantly increases MVPA, and improves motor function in young children. Plans are underway to more widely disseminate this groundbreaking program that will give young children an early start on a healthy lifestyle to prevent obesity, diabetes and heart disease later in life.
