About CHSR
The Center for Health Services Research has been established at The
University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Its mission includes
promoting research and education among the faculty and students of The
University of Tennessee on topics related to the organization, delivery,
effectiveness and financing of health care services, and supporting informed and
effective policy making and planning to enhance the health of the citizens of
Tennessee. The Center strives to become a trusted resource and valued
partner for developing and evaluating health-related public policies and
programs.
The Center will accomplish its mission though two integrated
strategies. First, The Center will promote coordinated efforts to expand
interdisciplinary health services research. Specific objectives include
initiating campus-wide activities such as journal clubs and conferences devoted
to health policy and health services research; providing technical support to
investigators for formulating research projects and developing grant proposals;
and expanding opportunities for education in health care systems and policy
among the undergraduate and graduate education programs.
Second, The Center will provide timely, reliable, meaningful and relevant
information on a broad range of health care topics to policy makers and planners
in governmental and private health care organizations. This will be
accomplished by facilitating direct contacts between policy makers and faculty
experts; conducting research projects to evaluate specific health care issues;
sponsoring professional education programs for leaders of health-related
agencies, organizations and industries; convening symposia to address topics
critical to improving health and health care; and publishing periodic reports
that expand upon and interpret research conducted by the faculty and others on
issues of importance to Tennessee.
In each of these efforts, The Center will link faculty with interests in
behavioral health, biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health
economics, health systems administration, medical ethics, preventive medicine,
public health, and public policy and administration — in addition to allied
health, dentistry, medicine and the basic medical sciences, nursing, pharmacy
and social work — to provide an integrated and interdisciplinary approach for
improving health and assessing health care issues, policies and programs.
Faculty and professional staff from other local or regional academic centers and
health care agencies with supporting interests will also be included in the
activities of the Center.
