The University of
Memphis &The
University of Tennessee Health Science Center
Message from the Executive Director
Welcome to the webpage of the School of Biomedical
Engineering at the Health Science Center, University of Tennessee.
The School of Biomedical Engineering is one of the
fastest growing units of the University of Tennessee. From its inception
in 1989, the school now boasts one of the largest graduate programs in
biomedical engineering in the U.S.A. with approximately one hundred M.S. and
Ph.D. graduate students enrolled. This graduate program is jointly
operated with our partner institution, the University of Memphis. We
offer three kinds of graduate degrees in biomedical engineering: the M.S.
degree based on a research project; the M.S. degree based on a research
thesis; and the Ph.D. degree based on a doctoral dissertation. Our graduates
have gone on to many prestigious institutions including Harvard University,
Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, the University of North Carolina,
Mayo Clinic, NASA, and to many of the leading industrial organizations in the
nation. In general, job prospects and salaries in biomedical
engineering are excellent.
The faculty is vigorously engaged in research
programs awarded by the federal government, research foundations, and
local and national industry. The research specialties of our faculty
include biomechanics, cell and tissue engineering, electrophysiology, medical
imaging, and health informatics. Several new biomedical devices and
techniques have been developed and patented by our faculty.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have
any questions.
