Clinical Teaching Sites

Almost all clinical training takes place in conveniently located tertiary-level medical centers within easy walking distance of each other on the UT Medical Center Campus or in the adjacent VA or Methodist Medical Centers.

The Regional Medical Center (The MED) is UT's primary teaching hospital. Serving about 150 miles and a population of one million. The MED exposes residents to a diverse patient population and a wide variety of illnesses. A Level I Trauma Center, The MED is the referral center for trauma cases resulting from, among other things, inner-city violence, rural farm accidents, highway accidents, and more general trauma. Many of the inner-city patients treated at The MED present unusual and advanced pathologies. The MED's OB department, a Level IV obstetric service, has 15 labor, delivery, recovery rooms, 3 operating rooms and a dedicated 4 bed OB Intensive Care Unit used for over 6000 deliveries a year, many which are high risk. This is the primary site of the Obstetric Anesthesiology subspecialty clinical track.

The UT Pain Clinic, is a dedicated pain management center for chronic pain evaluation. The clinic has recently added faculty and expanded to two additional hospitals. Selected patients are seen as part of the Pain Therapy advanced clinical track.

The Veteran's Administration Medical Center, with 836 beds, 6 operating rooms, and a lithotripter unit, provides residents with exposure to a diverse patient population.

LeBonheur Children's Hospital is a 225-bed, tertiary-care center and pediatric referral center. It has 9 operating rooms and a pediatric intensive care unit. Lebonheur, in conjunction with St. Jude's Research Hospital, has developed programs which provide residents with a large pediatric cancer patient population. LeBonheur handles approximately 9,000 cases a year and has emerged as a regionally recognized liver transplant center. Residents are exposed to a variety of cases ranging from a simple ear operation to complex pediatric heart transplant. This is the primary site of the Pediatric subspecialty clinical track.

Methodist Hospital, also adjacent to the UT Campus has 837 beds, 28 operating rooms, 9 labor rooms, and 3 delivery rooms.

Methodist Hospital provides cardiovascular and neurosurgical anesthesia rotations and provides residents with experience in private practice. This hospital system, and its related satellite hospitals in Memphis, offer a breadth of experience which prepares residents for different types of equipment and operating room setup.
