Mission Statement
Our mission at the University of Tennessee is to produce excellent
clinical practitioners. This mission is anchored in the effort to
further knowledge, to nurture individual research interests and
to encourage critical thinking. It is accomplished through superior
teaching and patient care. Combined, we believe these elements shape
the best clinical practitioners.
As a tertiary-care center serving an area with about a 150 mile
radius, the UT program exposes its residents to a diverse patient
population over one million. In addition to their primary experience
at The Regional Medical Center (The MED), our residents rotate through
a children's hospital, a Level IV obstetric hospital, a veteran's
hospital, and a multidisciplinary pain-center; providing them with
a wealth of opportunities for diverse clinical experiences and learning.
While providing the best clinical care and training is our primary
goal, we also place an emphasis on research. Our department believes
that research is a necessary element in the training of residents
as it serves to stimulate thought and to teach them how to investigate
and to question old methods, to develop new ones, and to judge the
journals and papers they will be reading throughout their career.
Residents who express research interests are enthusiastically encouraged
to become involved in original or current research projects.
We encourage you to visit The University of Tennessee Health Science
Center located in Memphis, TN to review our programs and to interact
with faculty and residents. I look forward to meeting you personally
and to working with you to meet your professional goals.
