Anesthesiology Department

History & Information

Founded in 1911, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis is a comprehensive health science center focusing on education, research, patient care, and public service. In addition to Anesthesiology, UT Health Science Center sponsors graduate medical education in 26 different medical and subspecialty residency programs, as well as programs in the Colleges of Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Allied and Graduate Health Sciences.

As the largest teaching medical center in a 150 mile radius, University of Tennessee Health Science Center draws patients from Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky and Missouri.

The University of Tennessee has been educating anesthesiologists since Robert Hingson, M.D., instituted a formal program in 1942.

Today, the residency program provides the most up-to-date clinical education and experience for 12 residents through their CA-1, CA-2, and CA-3 years. The size of the program encourages strong teamwork and camaraderie among residents and ensures high faculty-to-resdient ratio. Working closely with others lends itself to a people-oriented atmosphere and to a shared work ethic.

In addition to conferences, the program stresses independent study and research. CRNA's in the department decrease the routine case load which contributes to a complimentary balance between education, service and personal life.

UT's CA III year provides excellent breadth of experience and strong academic training in each of the three clinical tracks:

  1. Subspecialty Clinical Tacks in either Obstetric Anesthesiology, Pain Therapy, or Pediatrics.
  2. Advanced Clinical Track
  3. Clinical Scientist Track

As career interests become more focused, we work with the residents to define the CA-3 year best for them.

All rotations and required clinical experiences are offered in Memphis.

The Anesthesiology Program at UT has proven successful in its mission by meeting the national average of percentage of graduates passing the Boards on their first attempt and with all graduates of the last 5 years finding associated employment.
