Clinical Experience & Didactics

With such a wide variety of patients, cases, and facilities, anethesiology residents at UT emerge with a well-rounded education and proficiency in a broad range of anesthetic procedures and settings. Supervision in the operating room is generally on a 1:1 or 1:2 level, depending on rotation and individual skills. On average, each resident is involved in 490 cases each year. With experinece and increasing proficiency, residents tackle more chalenging cases with greater efficiency. The chart below gives an overview of this rich clinical experience by providing the average number of cases per resident for the 1999-2000 year.

Didactics are a key element of the UT anesthesiology resident experience. The program includes: an introductory lecture series designed to prepare the CA-1 resident for the operating room work; a two-year continuum of lectures in the clinical sciences which provides CA-1, CA-2, and CA-3 residents with specific training in the anesthesiology subspecialties and prepares them for board exams; a monthly journal club; and a monthly Quality Assurance Conference and a monthly research symposium.   1 mo.
