Medical Technology Program

The Medical Technology program is designed as the third and fourth years
of a baccalaureate degree program and consists of 21 months on the campus
of the UT Health Science Center. This program in Medical Technology is
unique in a number of ways. It is the oldest Medical Technology program
in the United States and has graduated many distinguished Medical Technologists
who are leaders in the field since it opened in 1922. As part of an educational
institution which is also a health sciences center, Medical Technology
students at the UT Health Science Center have a number of unique educational
opportunities which prepare them for success in the field. The UTHSC program
in Medical Technology is accredited by the:
National Accrediting Agency,
Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)
8410 West Bryn Mawr Ave., Suite 670

Broad Based Educational Experiences
In addition to scientific, technical and clinical experiences which are
basic to Medical Technology education, there are courses to develop management,
education and decision-making skills. Computer science and research and
development in applied laboratory problems are included as well. Graduates
are then prepared for the expanding roles Medical Technologists are expected
to fill in the future.

Opportunity to Explore Special Interests
Students are given the unique opportunity to choose an area of special
interest to them for additional study during their senior year. Students
have chosen a wide range of areas, including specialized clinical studies,
assignment to the medical examiners’ office, community health clinics,
research labs and many others. Because we are part of a major health science
center, the kinds of experiences students can choose are quite varied
and numerous.
Preparation for Professional Responsibility
Students discuss issues in the field with practicing Medical Technologists
during seminar courses and through involvement in Medical Technology professional
societies. Opportunities for participation in local, state and national
professional organizations are made available and encouraged. A course
is included which helps young professionals understand the social, economic,
and political factors impacting health care today and how they may best
contend with them in a professional manner.
Education in a Health Science Center
Since the UT Health Science Center provides education for a number of
other health care professionals on this campus, Medical Technology students
begin to experience the concept of the health care team early in the curriculum.
Such interaction at this stage of professional growth is vital in the
development of true professionals who understand their role in delivering
quality health care services, and fosters respect and understanding among
the professions.
