Graduate Program in
Dental Hygiene

Master of Dental Hygiene (MDH) Program

The Program is designed for dental hygienists desiring to teach.

The Master in Dental Hygiene is an advanced degree designed for licensed dental hygienists with baccalaureate degrees. The goal of the professional degree program, Master in Dental Hygiene (MDH), is to attract students from Tennessee as well as nationwide in order to prepare individuals to serve as educators and leaders in the dental hygiene profession. It is expected that this program will attract a wide audience due to the following unique characteristics of the program. The distance learning web-mediated design will allow students to earn a graduate degree from their area of residence while continuing to practice. The flexible curricula design allows for full or part time enrollment.

Students are only required to be on campus one week each summer. An orientation week will be held each summer for students entering the program. Continuing students will attend an advanced one week workshop each summer. With faculty approval, field experience courses and practicum can be completed in the students’ state of residence.

Students select their own rate of progress through the Program, although all degree requirements must be completed within five years of the date of initial enrollment. Full-time study is also available. Students in the full-time program could complete the program requirements in as little as four semesters. The initial credit hour requirement for the M.D.H. degree was 30 semester hours.  Students who enter the program after January 1, 2010 will be required to complete a 33 hour curriculum.

Program Goals:

  • Prepare educators for faculty positions in entry level dental hygiene programs.
  • Assist in alleviating the national shortage of dental hygiene faculty.
  • Provide graduates with the skills necessary to be successful in leadership positions in education, professional organizations, community health organizations and/or the corporate arena.
  • Add to the body on knowledge of dental hygiene through student, graduate, and faculty generated scholarly activity.
