1. DH 600 Methods and Strategies of Dental Hygiene Teaching
3 credit hours
The purpose of this course is to prepare graduates to teach and evaluate didactic courses traditionally included in the undergraduate dental hygiene curriculum. Components of this course include: overview of adult educational theory, face-to-face and web-based instructional technology, curriculum design, and teaching strategies and evaluation techniques related to cognitive and affective teaching and learning. Extensive graduate student classroom teaching is included in DH 702. Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for DH 702 Internship in Dental Hygiene Education.
2. DH 601 Dental Hygiene Clinical Teaching and Evaluation
3 credit hours
The purpose of this course is twofold. First, graduates will be prepared to teach and evaluate fine psychomotor skills both in preclinical technique courses and in dental hygiene clinic. The second purpose is to prepare graduates to serve as clinical coordinators and/or clinical faculty members. Included in this section is information related to clinic administration as it applies to both clinical faculty and students. Developing undergraduate students’ professional behavior, clinical technique, and patient communication skills during patient treatment will be emphasized. Graduates will gain knowledge related to clinical administration as it relates to establishing clinical requirements, competencies and mock clinical exams and calibration of clinical grading. Extensive student clinical teaching is included in DH 702 Internship in Dental Hygiene Education. Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for DH 702 Internship in Dental Hygiene Education.
3. DH 602 Introduction to Research for the Health Professional
3 credit hours
This course is designed for basic introduction to research methods and statistics for dental hygiene educators. It will provide a step-by-step overview of the research process and describe widely used methods for statistical analysis. Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for DH 704 Culminating Project in Dental Hygiene Education.
4. DH 603 Community Oral Health Promotion
3 credit hours
This course is project-based and will further prepare students to serve in leadership positions in public and/or private-not-for-profit dental public health agencies. This graduate course builds on Community Dental Health course(s) completed in the undergraduate curriculum. It will expand knowledge and concepts covered in undergraduate community oral health planning and will be tailored to the graduate students’ area of expertise and interest.
5. DH 700 Dental Hygiene Education: Administration, Planning, and Organization
3 credit hours
The study of leadership theories and program administration unique to dental hygiene educational programs, including an understanding of general and specialized accreditation processes, role of state dental licensure boards, human resources, faculty performance assessment, program financing from public funding and clinical fees, clinic administration and outcomes assessment.
6. DH 701 Student Services in Dental Hygiene Education
3 credit hours
An overview course of student services available at the community college or university level such as but not limited to student health, recruiting, admissions, financial aid, and judicial affairs.
7. DH 703 Discipline Studies in Dental Hygiene Education
3 credit hours
Concentrated study in the discipline which the graduate student plans to teach, such as oral radiology, histology, periodontology, community oral health, clinical dental hygiene, distance education, etc. Course content must be approved by the graduate director.
8. DH 702 Internship in Dental Hygiene Education
3 credit hours
The purpose of this course is to allow the student extensive experience in day to day operation of a dental hygiene program. Preclinical/clinical Teaching: Each graduate student is required to participate in pre-clinical and/or clinical instruction at a dental hygiene program for a minimum of one day per week for an entire semester at the campus chosen by the MDH student and approved by the graduate director. In addition to clinical teaching, each graduate student is required to assist a professor in teaching a didactic course in a dental hygiene program. Students are required to attend all class meetings, provide a minimum of 10 hours of didactic instruction and develop a minimum of 1 exam. Graduate students will be evaluated by both course instructor(s) and undergraduate students.
Graduate faculty will work closely with students to identify appropriate faculty mentors from dental hygiene educational programs in students' home communities so that requirement can be completed, even at a distance from the Memphis campus.
9. DH 705 Elective Study in Dental Hygiene
3 credit hour
The purpose of this course is to allow the student flexibility in meeting specific educational needs. Elective course content must be approved by the MDH curriculum committee.
10. DH 704 Culminating Project in Dental Hygiene Education
3 credit hours
This is a capstone activity which should demonstrate the writing, organizational and communication skills associated with the MDH degree. The graduate student will identify a mentor or advisor for this project who has demonstrated content expertise related to the topic selected. The topic must be related to material taught in the MDH curriculum and approved by the MDH curriculum committee. Students are not allowed to register for this course without consultation with the graduate director. This course is typically taken during the final semester of the curriculum.
It is required that the student defend the capstone activity proposal during the on-site Memphis campus visit.
The graduate student will select one of the following options:
1. conduct an extensive research project. Oral and written reports required, including defense of project and acceptance for oral or poster presentation at a regional or national meeting.
2: complete a rigorous project focused on real-world dental hygiene setting and application of problem-solving methods for development of solutions. Oral and written reports required, including defense of project and acceptance for oral or poster presentation at a regional or national meeting.
