Health Informatics and Information Management Faculty
The program has well-known and outstanding faculty members who have served and are serving in numerous leadership positions at the local, state, regional and national levels. Three faculty members have served as presidents of the local (MHIMA) and the state professional organization (THIMA). Beth Bowman is past chair of the national Professional Development Committee and Past Chair of the Assembly on Education. She is currently the Chair of the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). McCain chaired and Bowman participated on a national curriculum group to develop model curricula for HIA and HIT programs and McCain developed a model curriculum for graduate programs in health information management. Mary McCain has served as president of the Southeastern Association and as Chair of the American Health Information Management Association's Assembly on Education, which is the national education association, and chair of the Council on Accreditation of AHIMA, responsible for accrediting programs in HIA and HIT. McCain received the University of Tennessee Public Service Award and the Kate Gooch Award from Leadership Memphis. Beth Bowman received the 1999 AHIMA Educator Award. Faculty members have contributed to the knowledge of the field, with chapters in textbooks, editing textbooks, articles in professional journals, editorship of the state Legal Handbook, and by conducting workshops on coding and legal issues. McCain, Bowman and Reynolds have been recipients of the Tennessee Health Information Management Association's Distinguished Member Award and the school and the local association received the Educator-Practitioner Collaborative Award from the AHIMA. Rebecca Reynolds, MHA, RHIA, Associate Professor and Interim Director, Master of Health Infomatics and Inforamtion Management, is also responsible for HIPAA privacy and security training. She is a past president of the Tennessee Health Information Management Association and has served on the AHIMA Nominating Committee. She is completing the doctoral program in Higher Education Leadership at the University of Memphis. David Rosenthal, Ph.D. has a doctorate in Technology Management from Indiana State University, and has 10 years of healthcare experience including work in administrative, managerial and other roles in hospital information technology departments. His research interests include the existence of the digital divide in healthcare and innovation in telemedicine/telehealth. Marcia Sharp, MBA, RHIA joined the faculty as an Instructor on March 1, 2006. She has had an outstanding career in Health Information Management and in Human Resource Management. She is active in professional association activities and will be teaching management and personnel courses within the curriculum.
