Brief Overview of Courses at UTHSC
Health Information Science and Laboratory
Introduction to the field of health information management, including
orientation to medical care institutions, history of patient records,
professional ethics, and functions of a health information department.
Study of components, development and use of the records and flow of patient
information through the facility: Forms Design; ICD-9-CM and HCPCS/CPT
coding; preservation of records; statistical techniques and data analysis,
and use of clinical information in quality, risk management, and peer
review activities. Survey of related systems for other health care facilities.
Organization and Administration of Health Care Facilities
Principles of organization and administration of hospitals and other health
care facilities; accrediting and regulatory agencies; financing of health
care; medical staff organization; and organization of other hospital and
health care facility departments.
Organization and Administration
Application of principles of organization, administration, leadership,
and human relations to the health information department. Includes utilization
of financial and physical resources, financial management of health care
facilities, development of systems, procedures, services and equipment;
controlling quality of departmental functions.
Fundamentals of Medical Science and Terminology
Study of nature and causes of disease, treatment and management of patients,
and terms related to medical science and the health care field.
Directed Experience
Directed practical experience in information management procedures, management
of personnel, and interdepartmental relationships in health care facilities
in Memphis.
Management Affiliation
Five-week management assignment in an accredited hospital, which includes
experiences in activities and responsibilities of department managers.
Research Seminar
Introduction to principal research techniques and procedures, literature
resources and information retrieval, clinical/biomedical research support.
Legal Concepts for the Health Field
Principles of law applied to the health field with emphasis on federal,
state, and local laws and regulations affecting health information practice,
confidentiality, privacy and security of information.
Health Information Technology and Systems
A review of information systems, the evolution of the electronic health
record, and the application of newer techniques to the handling of information
in medical situations; a review of health data systems, including data
requirements of health organizations and federal agencies; Systems analysis;systems
selection and evaluation. Lectures supplemented with laboratory experience
in the computer lab.
Personnel Administration
Employer-employee relationships, governing laws and regulations, evaluation,
selection, training and in-service education, transfer, promotion, dismissal
of employees, and problem solving.
