Meet the Faculty

The program has well-known and outstanding faculty members who have served and are serving in numerous leadership positions at the local, state, regional and national levels. Three faculty members have served as presidents of the local (MHIMA) and the state professional organization (THIMA). Faculty members have contributed to the knowledge of the field, with chapters in textbooks, editing textbooks, articles in professional journals, editorship of the state Legal Handbook, and are often invited to speak at national and regional conferences.

Beth Bowman

Beth Bowman

Beth Bowman is a professor in the Department of Health Informatics and Information Management. She holds a master’s degree in Public Health Administration and is a Registered Health Information Administrator. She is the past chair of the national Professional Development Committee, the Assembly on Education and of the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Beth Bowman received the 1999 AHIMA Educator Award. Her areas of expertise are coding and classification systems and secondary uses of data.

Dr. Rebecca Reynolds

Dr. Rebecca Reynolds

Dr. Rebecca Reynolds is an associate professor and the program director for the graduate program in Health Informatics and Information Management. She holds a doctoral degree in Higher Education Administration and is a Registered Health Information Administrator. She is a past president of the Tennessee Health Information Management Association and has served on the AHIMA Nominating Committee. Dr. Reynolds’ expertise is on HIPAA privacy and security and legal issues relating to electronic health records. Her research interests include physician technology acceptance and faculty technology use. She is currently serving as the interim department chair.

Marcia Sharp

Marcia Sharp

Marcia Sharp is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Informatics and Information Management. She holds a master’s degree in Business Administration and is a Registered Health Information Administrator. She has had an outstanding career in Health Information Management and in Human Resource Management. She is active in professional association activities and has expertise in management and personnel issues. She is pursuing her doctoral degree in Adult Education Leadership. Her research interests include faculty development and technology use.
