Admission Requirements
The prerequisite courses required for admission to the entry-level program are not offered at UT Health Science Center but may be completed at other accredited colleges or universities. Required courses do not have to be completed at the time of application, but all requirements must be met by the time the program begins in August. Final transcripts must be received documenting completion of all required courses.

- "D" grades are not counted for any courses.
- Verification is required of the completion of one year of American history at the high school or college level.
- Questions regarding substitution of hours or courses should be directed to the Chair.
Human Anatomy and Physiology
Complete standard course(s) including laboratory will meet this requirement.
Principles of Management
One course covering management theories is required.
English Composition and Literature
The usual freshman and sophomore courses in composition and literature are required. One course in speech may be substituted for one term of literature. Strong English written and oral communication skills are essential for success in the program.
Social Sciences
Social Sciences includes psychology, economics, history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, etc.
Statistics
Statistics courses taught in psychology, education, sociology, management, or other departments which provide a foundation of basic statistics will fulfill this requirement.
Medical Terminology
Course on the language of medicine should include prefixes, roots and suffixes as well as terms related to diseases of the body systems. A course in Latin or Greek etymology will not fulfill this requirement.
Information Systems
This course should include computer concepts (hardware components, systems architectures, operating systems and languages, and software packages and tools)
Electives
Suggested electives include organization and management, personnel/human resources management, management information systems, finance, accounting, or other appropriate electives. Courses that are prerequisite to required courses will also count as electives.
Physical education, applied art and music classes and ROTC are not counted toward the total hours credit or for calculating the GPA.
Additional admission requirements include a preprofessional evaluation from the college of university attended and a visit to a HIIM department in a hospital.
Technical Standards
Applicants must meet the minimum technical standards or essential skills necessary for the professional practice of health information management.
