Founded in 1878, The University of Tennessee, Memphis College of Dentsitry
is the oldest dental college in the South and one of the oldest in the nation.
The Winfield Dunn Dental Clinical Building, with 322 patient treatment chairs
and an office for each student, gives the College one of the finest physical
plants in the nation. The college offers a one-year residency program in
Advanced Education in General Dentistry plus specialty programs in four
areas: Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, and Periodontics.
D.D.S. Program Overview
- Degree conferred: Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.)
- One class admitted each year; enters in mid-August. Class is limited
to 90 new students each year.
- Program is four years, consisting of nine months during the first two
years, and eleven months during the last two years of clinical training.
- Qualified Tennesseans and children of alumni of the University of Tennessee
system are given first priority; however, a certain number of Arkansas
students are accepted each year under a formal agreement with that state.
Admission Requirements
- A minimum of 90 semester hours of undergraduate work, including the
course work listed below, are required for admission. However, preference
in selection is given to those who have completed course work required
by their college to enable them to receive a bachelor's degree upon completion
of the first year of dental school. Four years of college and a degree
are strongly recommended.
- A minimum grade point average of 2.5 in required subjects is expected.
- The Dental Admission Test (DAT) is required, with desired scores of
16 or above in all categories. (The average GPA and DAT scores of those
accepted are generally higher than these minimums.)
- Although a thorough background in the biological and physical sciences
is essential to the study of dentistry, a broad educational background
in the humanitites is desirable. Applicants are encouraged to major in
the field of their interest. No major field is given preference over another,
although most pre-dental students major in biology or chemistry.
