Cheryl Scheid, Ph.D.
The Vice Chancellor for Academic, Faculty, and Student Affairs
Born in Maryland, Cheryl Scheid spent her formative years in Virginia, attending high school and later college (William and Mary) before moving to New England to pursue advanced degrees. She received a Master’s and later a PhD in Biology (Endocrinology) from Boston University (1972, 1976) and carried out postdoctoral studies (smooth muscle physiology) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS). Her first faculty position was at Tufts University where she was affiliated with both the College of Medicine and the College of Veterinary Medicine, but she soon returned to UMMS, where she established a career in biomedical research (cardiovascular physiology and the cell biology of kidney stone disease), rising in rank to the level of Professor of Physiology and Surgery with tenure. In 1996, she took on her first major administrative duties, serving as the Vice Chancellor for Faculty Affairs at UMMS. Initially a half time position, the duties expanded over time, including a brief period of service as both the Vice Chancellor for Faculty Affairs at UMMS and the Vice President for Academic Affairs at the school’s clinical partner, U. Mass Memorial Health Care. Dr. Scheid later served as the Interim Provost at UMMS before being recruited by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in the fall of 2006. She has served as the Vice Chancellor for Academic, Faculty and Student Affairs since that time.
