Dr. Steiner was born in New York City in 1960 and graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University in 1982 with a degree in molecular biology.  In 1986, he received his medical degree with highest honors from The University of Tennessee, Center for the Health Sciences. 

From 1986-1992, Dr. Steiner served his residency in general surgery and urology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the James Buchanan Brady Urologic Institute.  During this time he did 18 months of postdoctoral research at the James Buchanan Brady Urologic Institute.  During 1992, Dr Steiner served as Chief of Service and Instructor in Urology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

From 1993-1995, he was a member of the faculty of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Urology, Cell Biology and Pathology and specialized in clinical urologic oncology.  Dr. Steiner did postdoctoral research at Vanderbilt as the Ortho Scholar of the American Foundation for Urologic Research and worked with Dr. Harold Moses studying the role of peptide growth factors in prostate carcinogenesis.

In 1995 Dr. Steiner joined the faculty of The University of Tennessee, Memphis College of Medicine, as Associate Professor of Urology and Pharmacology and Director of Urologic Oncology.  In June 1995 he was named the Mark S. Soloway Professor of Urology, Chair of Excellence. 

Dr. Steiner served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology, The University of Tennessee, Memphis, from 1999-2003.

Dr. Steiner is a Diplomat of the American Board of Urology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He is a member of the Endocrine Society, American Society of Clinical Oncologists, American Association for Cancer Research, American Urological Society, Urological Research Association, Society for Basic Urology Research, Society for Urologic Oncology, American Society of Gene Therapy and other prestigious societies.

Dr. Steiner has conducted independent laboratory cancer research since 1980 and has been a recipient of NIH RO1s, Department of Defense, and CaP CURE Grants.  He was a member of the Cancer Leukemia Group B Intergroup study section.

He serves as a member of the editorial board of Gene Therapy and Molecular Biology Journal, past Editor-in-Chief of the World Journal of Urology, Section Editor of Prostate Cancer section of Current Opinions in Urology, and was a member of the NIH, NCI, American Foundation for Urologic Disease and American Cancer Society study sections.  He also serves as the Research Editor for the World Journal of Urology and is a Reviewer of Urology, Journal of Urology, Human Pathology, International Journal of Cancer and Urologic Oncology.

He has authored over 200 abstracts and publications and has 276 patents issued and/or pending.

Dr. Steiner is currently a Professor at The University of Tennessee, Health Science Center, Department of Urology, and is also the Vice Chairman and CEO of GTx, Inc., the Men’s Health Biotech Company which he co-founded in 1997.
