Welcome to the Office of Graduate Medical Education
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is monitoring and evaluating the effects of Hurricane
Katrina on
residency programs in Louisiana. As communication is re-established, more information will become available regarding the number of
residents needing temporary placement, their specialty/subspecialty and the level of their training.
Any inquiries regarding providing or receiving assistance should be directed to the Graduate Medical Education Office at (901) 448-5364.
The GME Office will be the point of contact with ACGME and the affected programs regarding the placement of any residents.
Commitment to Medical Education
The University of Tennessee
College of Medicine’s commitment to medical
education as stated in its mission statement is
to provide "a broad array of programs targeted
at the education and training of physicians at
the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate
levels.
As the responsible institution
for all ACGME accredited residency programs, the
College of Medicine is responsible for the
administrative oversight and academic quality of
the residency programs that it sponsors. The
policies of the University of Tennessee and
College of Medicine govern the administration of
the residency programs. Each resident is
registered as a graduate student in the College
of Medicine, and all residents are paid and
provided benefits by the University of
Tennessee. The faculty in all participating
hospitals holds regular or clinical appointments
within the College of Medicine. Thus, the
College of Medicine is responsible for the
oversight, coordination, curricular development,
allocation of positions, approval of new
programs, the periodic review of programs,
quality monitoring, the development of
affiliation agreements, the appointment and
assignment of faculty and the provision of
resident support.
The UT GME Program is a
statewide program with approximately 900
residents training in participating hospitals
located in Chattanooga, Jackson, Knoxville,
Memphis and Nashville. Due to the distance and
size of the Chattanooga and Knoxville Programs,
the Chattanooga Unit of the College of Medicine
and the Knoxville Graduate School of Medicine
are independently accredited by ACGME to sponsor
the training programs located in those cities.
However, all residents are considered graduate
students of UT and have standard salaries and
benefits. The Associate Dean for Graduate
Medical Education of the Chattanooga Unit and
the Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine are
responsible for the institutional oversight of
these GME Programs.
