UTHSC Careers in Medicine encourages all medical students to visit the site designed by the University of Virginia Health System to help medical students choose a medical specialty. When accessing the Medical Specialty Aptitude Test (MSAT), you will be asked to rate your tendencies compared to the tendencies of physicians in each specialty. The higher your score for a given specialty, the more similar you are to the physicians in that specialty. This material was originally published in the book "How to Choose a Medical Specialty", by Anita Taylor. Take a minute to see how your results compare to your idea of what specialty you will choose.

Some students enter medical school certain as to what type of physician they will become. Some students may have some idea based on previous experiences while others choose to remain open-minded. Even still, some students have little experience to draw from and, therefore, are unfamiliar with the many career opportunities available to them. Regardless of where you are in your decision-making process, the most important thing you can do as a student is to be pro-active and well informed.
The UTHSC Careers in Medicine Program is a student-led interest group, which is sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs in conjuction with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Dedicated to helping students achieve their long-range professional goals, this group, led by Dr. Owen P. Phillips, works with the Office of Student Affairs to promote a number of class-specific events designed to aid students in the decision-making process. The Office of Student Affairs:
- provides an individual, one-time user access code for CiM Web site access
- organizes and implements workshops
- obtains Student Guides from the AAMC national CiM office
- selects and recruits faculty advisors
- represents the the College of Medicine in the ongoing implementation
and expansion of the Careers in Medicine program developed by the AAMC

The focus of this student interest group is to introduce medical students to various career planning mechanisms available to them. On this site, students will find information about specialty interest groups and events, faculty and physicians mentors, free campus, community and online resources, volunteer and employment opportunities, and much more. Students will also be able to take advantage of opportunities to discuss and ask questions related to such matters as: "how to choose electives or how to prepare a CV and personal statement; what to expect during residency interviews and basically, and how to survive the whole Match process.
Think about it - one day you're in line picking up your new student orientation packet and continental breakfast and seemingly the next day, you're applying for residency. Where did those four years go?
Our goal is to ensure that all medical students have a solid plan for pursuing their career choice by the time he/she reaches their fourth year. From getting advise on choosing electives and arranging for away rotations to dealing with the deadlines for the Match, the journey one must follow to reach his/her goal becomes much less stressful and much more clear when someone is lighting the way.
