Computer Requirement for College of Medicine

Computer Requirement for College of Medicine

POLICY

All incoming students to the UT College of Medicine are required to have a computer that is capable of access to the Internet. The College of Medicine provides students with access to campus-based computer labs, but due to the limited number of workstations available and use by other colleges, it is necessary for students to have their own computers.

Students who plan to use current computers must ensure the equipment meets the minimum requirements outlined below to allow for adequate connectivity to UT systems. Newly-purchased computers should meet the minimum recommendations. Computers must have programs capable of network connection to the Internet, and of performing basic functions in word processing, spreadsheet calculations, multimedia (imaging, video, and sound) and e-mail. Students are also advised to purchase a printer. A student Audience Response System (clicker) is required for classroom use. A Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) will be required by the beginning of the M-3 year. Costs of a computer, Internet connection, printer, PDA, and software may be included in financial aid requests.

RATIONALE
  • The practice of medicine has become heavily dependent on computer technology. (Graduates will use an electronic medical record upon entering practice.)
  • E-mail is the official method for faculty and administration to communicate with students. (Please see the College of Medicine e-mail policy for more information.)
  • Many courses use computer-based and web-based software to convey content.
  • Some class assignments require the use of a computer.
  • Course and clerkship evaluations are conducted online.
  • Scheduling for clerkships is done online.
  • Student transcripts are available online through the Student Information System (SIS).
  • A wealth of clinical information is available online and for PDAs.
  • Clerkship students (M-3s and M-4s) are required to document patient encounters into a web-based system.

NETWORK AVAILABILITY

UTHSC provides on-campus access to the Internet to all faculty, staff, and students. All buildings are wired for Ethernet access, including the dorms. There is limited plug-in access in the public buildings on campus. A list of wireless locations as well as instructions on connecting to the wireless network are available at http://www.utmem.edu/comp/campus/wireless.htm.
