Call/Night Float
Regional Medical CenterWhen assigned to wards at The Med, call is every fourth day from 7 am to 7 pm. Nighttime admissions and cross-cover are covered by a night float team Sunday through Thursday from 7 pm-7 am. Friday through Saturday, residents and interns who are on electives take call as the night float team. The night float team attends morning report daily, and on days when there is no morning report, the team will attend a private faculty teaching session. The ICU services (MICU and CICU) are on overnight call every fourth night. Housestaff are required to leave the hospital by 1 pm the following day in accordance with RRC guidelines. Residents/interns on night float and ICU rotations will be required to attend only one continuity clinic during the month. VA Medical CenterWhen assigned to wards at the VA every senior resident is on long call every 6 and interns are on over night call night every 9 days. Weekday short call is from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm and weekday long call overnight from 3:00 pm to 7:00 am. Weekend short call is from 7:00 am to 12:00 noon and weekend long call is from 12:00 noon to 7:00 am the next day. There is a night float system for interns only from Sunday to Thursday. One intern from the day team stays overnight. The second intern from the on call team covers from 4 pm - 7 pm and is relieved by the night float intern. Friday through Saturday both interns from the on call team stay overnight. The intern assigned to do night float at the VA will do the first two weeks at the VA and then rotate to the Med. The last two weeks will be done by NF Interns who are assigned to the MED, one week each.The ICU services (MICU and CICU) are on overnight call every fourth night. It is expected that all residents will leave the hospital by 1 pm on their post-call days, and no resident is scheduled for call on the night preceding their outpatient clinic day. Methodist University HospitalWhen assigned to wards at MUH, Sunday through Thursday the short call team will admit until 2:00 pm or until 5 patients are admitted, whichever occurs first. The long call team will start admitting patients at 2:00 pm or once the short team reaches its cap of 5. Call will end at 7:30 pm when the night float team arrives. The long call interns will provide cross-cover until 7:30 pm and will receive check-out from the other teams.The night float team will admit patients between 7:30 pm and 7:30 am. These patients will be distributed to the ward teams upon admission; the team with the fewest patients will be the first team to receive new admissions. he night float interns will provide cross-cover overnight and will receive check-out from the long call interns. Friday and Saturday the long call resident will act as the night float resident on the weekends. The interns on electives will provide night float coverage at this time. The ICU services (MICU and CICU) are on overnight call every fourth night. Elective MonthsOn elective months (eg., rotations other than Wards, ICU, or ER), residents have an average of 2-4 scheduled overnight calls and 2-4 back-up calls per month. For PGY1s, these scheduled calls will be either night float or ICU call. The PGY2 call is either in the ICU or night float. PGY3s will take night float or MOD call, and may also take ICU call occasionally. The back-up call system is utilized when a resident or intern is unexpectedly unable to take a scheduled call for serious health or personal reasons. In this situation, the resident or intern on back-up call will be asked to take the call. |
