The Residency Supervision Area is designed to assist hospitals and clinics with the protocols outlined for specific duties residents and fellows can perform. These guidelines are determined by the faculty of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Any questions about certain procedures not listed should be addressed to the faculty and not decided by the resident or fellow.

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
Resident Supervision
All
levels of Orthopaedic Surgery Residents (PGY 1, 2, 3,
4, or 5) can perform the following procedures under General Supervision. These
procedures do not require the presence of an attending physician:

3. Interpretation of imaging studies (radiographs, bone
scan, CT, MRI) |

4. Nonoperative
and operative treatment plans |

5. Protocols for rehabilitation |

6. Coordination of treatment with other disciplines |

7. Communication with pediatric patients and their families |
|
8. Triage of pediatric trauma patients |
|
9. Interpretation of specialized tests
and maneuvers for diagnosis in children and adolescents |
|
10. Differentiation of normal growth variants from
pathologic conditions |

2. Injection techniques for degenerative/inflammatory
soft-tissue conditions (DeQuervain |

3. Traction techniques |

4. Local block anesthesia |

7. Emergency closed reduction techniques |
|
8. Joint aspiration (ankle, knee, hip, wrist, elbow,
shoulder) |
All
other procedures are performed under personal and direct supervision.
