Part of each student's work is in a clinical setting. In addition to the facilities of the Memphis Joint Program in Biomedical Engineering, a clinical laboratory dedicated to the BME Pediatric Center is located at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center.

Each student in the Center works with two research advisors: one from engineering, and one from the clinical faculties. The advisors guide the student through clinically-oriented research projects and a thesis for MS studies or dissertation for doctoral studies.

This approach allows the student to bridge the activities of the engineering laboratory with the medical arena, to learn to conduct clinical research, and to work with clinical staff and patients.
