Sally Hamby Richey joined the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science in November, 1986 and became an active force in the professional organization on the local (MSCLS), state (TSCLS), and national (ASCLS) levels. She served in many capacities and received recognition for her leadership skills by being named as one of Tennessee's Keys to the Future Award recipients and TSCLS Member of the Year Award for 1996. She held such leadership positions as MSCLS President, TSCLS President, TSCLS State Convention Chairperson, TSCLS Membership Chairperson, TSCLS P.A.C.E. Coordinator, and TSCLS Licensure/Governmental Affairs Chairperson. She made presentations at state meetings, was a guest speaker for TSCLS Student Day, and was contributing author to a current hematology textbook.

She received a Master of Science degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Memphis and she served as an Assistant Professor for the College of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. She had a genuine zest for teaching students not only about laboratory procedures and test results, but about dedication to the profession of laboratory science. She was a true motivator and had positive strong feelings about students who had chosen or would choose the field of laboratory science.

It is a very fitting and appropriate way to carry on Sally's dedication to the profession of clinical laboratory science and to the professional organization by making available a scholarship fund that will serve to help students from across the state of Tennessee. The Tennessee Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (TSCLS) has established a scholarship fund in memory of Sally to help provide financial support for clinical laboratory science (MT & MLT) students across the state of Tennessee.
